Top Ten Fridays: Favorite Fall Things

I apologize to those of you who regularly read my blog. This was the first week of Preschool, so it has been quite a ride, without much time for blogging.

It feels like fall outside. There are even some leaves on the trees. (Global warming...yeah right!!) Anyway, I really love this season. I thought I would share this with you all.

Top Ten Favorite Fall Things: (in random order!)

10) The colors - They are lovely. The oranges, yellows, greens and browns. (A few reds, but not too many here in Alberta.) Gorgeous! They remind me that God makes beautiful things, including me.

9) School supplies - Even when I am not in school, I love the smell of sharpened pencils, erasers, paper, binders, notebooks, pens...I love school. One of the reasons I became a teacher.

8) New fall clothes - It's always fun for me to go through my closet and see all of the clothes that I have not worn for half a year. And you always seem to need a few new things, even though you are not in school anymore.

7) Sweaters - I love sweaters.

6) Thanksgiving - I love getting together with family, eating turkey and catching up. One of my favorite holidays.

5) Halloween - I know that it is not a favorite for many Christians, but it has always been a fun holiday for me. I get to dress up and be someone different. For the past couple of years I have been a witch and a clown. The clown has stuck. I love being a clown. I am going to be one for a long time to come, I think.

4) Crunchy leaves - Who doesn't like walking through the leaves and hearing them crunch under your shoes and socks? It is just like being a kid again.

3) Pumpkin Pie - My favorite of all pies. I LOVE it!! Especially topped with lots of whipped cream! (I feel the pounds being added to my hips as I speak.)

2) Birthday - My birthday (Dec. 21) is actually the first official day of winter. We usually have had at least a snowfall or two by then. But many times it is a brown birthday. I love my birthday, I just wish it was further away from Christmas.

1) Time change - I love the "fall back" hours in October. I love the fact of waking up to darkness and having supper when it is dusk. Many people don't, but there is something about it. Perhaps the quietness of life, even though we are awake. Perhaps it is the idea of getting up with the sun. I have always been a morning person, which probably helps.

What season is your favorite? What do you like about fall? I'd love to know!!

Let's spend some time this season crunching the leaves. Shall we?

Crunchy leaves are definitely high on my list, I can't wait to experience them with Liam. Halloween is my ultimate holiday, I love seeing the excitement in the kids! Maybe it's just the sugar rush from all the candy, it's a toss up. Pumpkins. The scent of the fall air. Sigh...

Hmmm, autumn is my favourite time of year by far! My favourite autumn things, in no particular order, are:

1. September - the month I met my hubby, married my hubby, and also it is my birthday month.

2. Halloween - although I never really dress up (not yet anyway - must prepare this year!), I love scary movies and spooky things, having kids come by for treats, and the fireworks the village does at the park each Halloween.

3. Hearing the Canada geese every morning and evening on the river as they stop-over during their flight south. Mind you, they started arriving around August 10th this year so autumn came early.

4. Seeing other bird species, like redpolls, trumpter swans, pelicans, and waxwings, as they pass through on their migration.

5. Seeing the hunters scurry around early in the morning before heading into the woods. Even though I'm a vegetarian and I'm not a huge fan of hunting, it makes me smile to see these men and women dressed in their camo, with their big trucks and campers, proudly displaying their antlers as they talk to other hunters in the grocery store parking lot. It's a very autumn ritual here!

6. Crisp, cold mornings with sun in the forecast...and no biting insects! The best time of the year to work in the bush! :)

7. Fall markets and fresh autumn fruits and veggies like apples, pears, winter squashes, pumpkins, beets, turnips, parsnips, potatoes and other autumn/winter crops. I love my root vegetables!

8. The changing of the colours of the fireweeds, vacciniums and other shrubs. We don't have a lot of deciduous trees here, but the wild shrubs and herbs can be equally beautiful as they turn various shades of yellow, orange and red.

9. Although we can have some looooong winters, I do love waking up to darkness in the morning and having nightfall come earlier and earlier.

10. Cooking stews and soups, and baking...although we had such a cruddy summer, I never really stopped doing cozy, autumnish recipes. ;)
